What to see and do in and around Dorset

The village of Dorset dates from the 1760’s. The old stagecoach road from Bennington to Burlington passed through the village. Located about seven miles north of Manchester, Vermont, Dorset is in a high valley with the Green Mountains to the east and the Taconic Range to the west. The residents have been careful to preserve the character of the village; the white houses by the graceful village green are part of a protected historic district.

Today, Dorset remains a quiet (but rather sophisticated) country village with a handful of shops and restaurants.

Dorset Playhouse

A popular repertory theater with a tradition dating back to the 1920’s. Most productions are staged during the summer months, but there are some performances during the other seasons as well. Check for current schedule.

Dorset Horse Show

A nationally ranked riding competition held every summer.

Gourmet Restaurants

You’ll find a superb choice of dining establishments in the area.

Hildene

A restored mansion built by Robert Todd Lincoln, offering guided tours, cross-country skiing, and a spectacular views of the Battenkill River Valley.

Museums and art galleries

The Southern Vermont Arts Center and Bennington Museum are within easy reach. If you’re interested in the history of fishing, don’t miss the American Museum of Fly Fishing.

Manchester Music Festival

World-class artists perform weekly concerts of fine music throughout the summer.
